The Slovak Agriculture and Food Chamber (SPPK) is starting to organise a protest in several places of the country in support of protesting European farmers and food producers, SPPK spokesperson Jana Holeciova told TASR on Tuesday.
Slovak farmers and food producers, SPPK members, will take to the streets and the borders next week, on February 22 in order to support their European peers.
According to Holeciova, the discussion between organisations associating farmers and food producers in the V4 countries in Warsaw (Poland) brought a clear conclusion - Slovaks, Czechs, Hungarians and Poles agreed to coordinate the protest across their countries. In addition, the Central-European farmers and food producers will be joined by their peers from Lithuania and Latvia on February 22.
The main reason for dissatisfaction of the six European countries that are joining the protest is the huge load of bureaucracy that the European Commission (EC) imposes on farmers and food producers, its unrealistic green goals and the insufficient protection of European markets from imports of Ukrainian commodities.
"We want to breed animals, grow crops and produce food, not sit at computers deciphering the sometimes even senseless requirements of the EC, which are constantly changing and hindering the development of the rural area. We apologise in advance to drivers for the chaos on the roads on February 22, but, unfortunately, we have no other option to draw the attention of EU officers," said Holeciova
Holeciova added that SPPK members are going to protest in a decent but vigorous manner so that they, together with their European peers, make European politicians and potential MEP candidates aware of the fatal mistakes that Brussels makes when deciding on the future of European agriculture and food industry.
