Slovakia on set to being a leader in the nuclear energy

Next year, Slovakia will probably be number one in the world,  in the amount of electricity generated from nuclear power.

Nuclear power stations last year supplied 59 per cent of the electricity in the country. That makes Slovakia nr 2 worldwide – only France has a larger percentage, with 62 per cent.

But last year, there were only two reactors operational at the Mochovce plant. The third reactor was running through its test phase. That has now been completed – as of yesterday it entered normal service, making it the fifth fully functional reactor in the country.

Together, they should be able to generate 65 per cent or two thirds of all electricity needed in Slovakia, estimates the economic newspaper HN.

The launch of the third reactor of the Mochovce nuclear power plant has brought Slovakia closer to energy self-sufficiency and now it's necessary to focus on the completion of the fourth one, said Economy Minister Denisa Sakova.

She received  the head of the  International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi on Monday. He praised the Mochovce nuclear power plant.

"It generates clean energy for Slovakia but also the whole of Europe. Once the fourth block goes online, you'll be able to export electricity and as far as energy sources are concerned, this country will be practically decarbonised," he pointed out. Grossi praised the level of Slovak nuclear energy and Slovak experts.
