Slovakia lags in fight against breast cancer

Slovakia is still catching up not only with the most advanced countries, but also with neighboring countries in many other areas - for example, in the prevention of oncological diseases. About 3,000 women get breast cancer every year - a third of them die. Early detection offers the best chance of survival. Experts emphasize the importance of mammography screening, which is intended for women over 50 years of age.

Dominika Kormanová, the president of the civic association Amazonky, was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 32 years old. She found the lump yourself. “I had a good job, it was a nice life time having a stable relationship with my boyfriend and spending a lot of time with my family. It was a huge shock when the illness came.”

Mammology was introduced in Slovakia in 2019. Screening coordinator of the National Oncology Institute, Jana Trautenberger Ricová: “Just to compare, in the Czech Republic, they started screening 21 years ago. Their results are significant with having one of the lowest mortality rate from this kind of illness in the whole of Europe.”

Slovakia has the seventh highest mortality rate from breast cancer in Europe.
