Curriculum reform introduced in Slovak primary schools

The curriculum reform, which will be introduced in nearly 40 primary schools in Slovakia from September. The reform aims to teach children to think, act and decide independently. Education Minister Daniel Butora said this during a visit to a primary school in Banska Bystrica (central Slovakia), one of those where the youngest pupils will learn according to the new state education programme.

"The most important news is that what we call the goals of education are changing. We need to move from teaching children to answer prepared test questions to teaching them to think, act and make decisions independently. We need to teach much less broadly and much more deeply," he said.

The minister added that children should be taught how to solve more complex problems in school, rather than being taught knowledge they can quickly look up. The curriculum reform will be introduced in 39 primary schools from the current school year. However, Bútora said there are dozens or hundreds of schools in Slovakia that already teach similarly to the new state curriculum.
"The important thing about these 39 schools is that they are the schools where this will be evaluated on an ongoing basis and recommendations will be made for future years when this will be formally extended to other schools," the education minister explained.
