The former Head of Slovakia’s Tax and Customs Office, Miroslav Mikulčík, has been cleared of charges for being responsible for the collapse of the IT system of his institution in early 2012, according to the business weekly Trend. In April he was accused of neglecting his duties by signing an addendum to a contract with IBM for the introduction of a new tax-collection system that allowed the IT company not to be held responsible for the system not working. The system failed and the tax office lost an estimated €8.8 million and now uses the old system.
Mikulčík admitted he was questioned last week in this respect and filed a complaint against an unknown perpetrator for "thwarting the consolidation of information systems". Now the Special Prosecutor’s Office has dropped charges against Mikulčík and restarted the investigation.
