Women earn 84% of men’s income in Slovakia

Last year, women in Slovakia worked for free from November 4 until the end of the year, and they received 84 cents for every euro earned by men, according to a report on the social situation of the Slovak population in 2022, developed by the Labour Ministry.

In the gender equality index of the European Union (EU), Slovakia ranked 24th. Over the past ten years, the salary gap between men and women hasn't changed significantly. It varied between 18-21 percent.

"The amount of the salary has an impact not only on economic stability but can play a role in assessing creditworthiness when applying for a loan, or influencing the amount of a retirement pension. In a survey conducted by one of the commercial banks on the Slovak market, more than 60 percent of Slovak women stated that it is more difficult for them to repay a loan or a mortgage because of their lower income, and they have to consider much more carefully whether to borrow money," said the ministry, adding that women also have a harder time creating a financial reserve.

Less than 5 percent of Slovak women have more than €10,000 in savings but there are four times more men who have such a reserve.
