Legendary actor Martin Huba turns 80

Slovak theatre, film and radio actor, teacher and theatre director Martin Huba turned 80 on Sunday. He was born on 16 July 1943 in Bratislava to the opera singer Mária Kišoňová and actor Mikuláš Huba. He graduated from the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava in 1964. Right after school and until 1967 he worked at the Theatre Východoslovenské štátne divadlo in Košice. From the 1967/1968 season he moved to Bratislava, becoming a member of the ensemble of the Theatre Divadlo na Korze until it was forcefully closed by the then communist soviet-led totalitarian regime in 1971. In 1976 Huba became a member of the Slovak National Theatre, where he has been working ever since.

In the 1990s, he also began to direct theatre plays. He won the 2001 DOSKY Theatre Critics' Award for his outstanding direction of the SND Drama Theatre's play Tančiareň (The Dancing Room). In the same year, his art was appreciated overall and he received the prestigious Crystal Wing award in the category of theatre and audiovisual arts.

One of his many outstanding achievements, apart from acting in numerous theatre plays and movies, is playing the title character in the play Contrabas for an incredible 22 years.
