Slovak authorities react to situation in Russia

The situation in Russia and Belarus after the attempted coup in Russia was the main topic of the phone call discussion between Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová with her Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda. The heads if states also discussed the possible developments on NATO's eastern border.

"Although there is no imminent danger to Poland or Slovakia, the Presidents agreed that events should continue to be monitored very closely. Recent days have shown that the policy of the current Russian leadership is not only a threat to security in Europe, but is already affecting the stability of Russia itself," said Čaputová’s spokesperson Martin Strižinec. He added that the partners will continue to communicate and coordinate, as they will do also with their other allies.

Parliamentary chair Boris Kollar expressed his conviction that Ukraine will win the war. “It is a complete subversion when a paramilitary organization threatens the Secretary of Defense and the President. I am now firmly convinced that Ukraine will be able to free itself,” said Kollár. He also declared continuing Slovak military support for Ukraine.

According to Slovak caretaker Foreign Minister Miroslav Wlachovský, the attempt in Moscow undermined the authority of Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to him, the attempted coup is a sign, that the fight for power of Russia is taking place. “In order for a change in politics, military coup is a tool in Russia, however, it is election in the western world. Now we can choose, which world do we like more. For me and people around me, we prefer the organized world with election,” stated Wlachovský.
