Exhibition commemorates Queen Elizabeth's visit

This autumn marks 15 years since Queen Elizabeth II visited Slovakia. To mark the occasion, a photo exhibition was opened in Hrebienok in the High Tatras on Monday in the presence of British Ambassador Nigel Baker. The exhibition presents different parts of the visit of the late British monarch, including the days she spent in the High Tatras region. "The Queen was one of the most photographed people in the world. Some of the photographs have never been published before. I think it is very important to commemorate this event, she was the only British monarch to visit Slovakia and it was a milestone in our mutual relations," said Baker. In addition to nature, the monarch was particularly impressed by the people she had the opportunity to meet, including mountain rescuers and guides. The exhibition also coincides with the 30th anniversary of modern British-Slovak relations, which both countries are celebrating this year. It will run for two weeks. "It was a great honour for the Tatra Mountains when the royal couple visited in 2008, and we wanted to mark the anniversary of this event in an appropriate way. This event required great preparations, especially in terms of security, we could not underestimate anything, I think we managed it very well at that time," said Mayor Jozef Stefanak, who worked as a municipal policeman at the time. He hopes that in the future they will be able to welcome Charles III to the Tatras. According to Štefaňák, The High Tatras are often a place of precious visits, mainly because they are considered the jewel of Slovakia. In this context, the locals are already preparing for the 30th anniversary of Pope John Paul II's visit and they want to commemorate this event in the town.
