A team of five experts from the “Dionyz Stur” Geological Institute have begun examining the site of the massive landslides that occurred after devastating torrential rains that hit Vrátna Valley near Terchova last week. The resulted landslides destroyed a number of roads in the area. Vrátna Valley is currently inaccessible both to residents and visitors.
Geologists will focus their attention on the causes of the massive landslides in the valley in order to determine how the area will be restored and what measures should be adopted to minimise the threat and potential consequences of natural disasters in the future. The first preliminary results as well as the official evaluation report should be available on Thursday, July 31.
On Monday the Government approved the first instalment of the €3.06 million financial assistance aimed at dealing with the consequences of the catastrophe. Žilina regional governor Juraj Blanar estimated that these should cover one-third of the overall expenditures required by the authority to secure all the necessary clear-up work. He went on to say that the task now is to reconstruct and prevent further landslides on the destroyed road in Vrátna Valley, which is owned by the region. The region will also have to dispose of tens of thousands of cubic metres of rocks that were washed down into the valley, blocking the Vavrinka River.
