Hundreds of people came onto the streets of Bratislava to honour the memory of murdered journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kusnirova five years after their deaths on Tuesday. Gatherings to mark the anniversary of their murders are taking place in several towns and cities all over Slovakia and the Czech Republic on Tuesday evening. They are organised by the For Decent Slovakia initiative.
We are in Slovakia with our minds and hearts, we are not indifferent to the fate of our native country. Costume designer Katarina Strbova Bielikova said this in her speech in front of the Slovak Embassy in Prague, where dozens of people commemorated the fifth anniversary of the murder. According to the designer, Slovaks living abroad can also do a lot to make Slovakia a fair, democratic country where laws apply and values are respected. Jan and Martina are an example that inspires and obliges us, she added.
On Tuesday, also the Danish-American-Czech co-production documentary Kuciak: The Murder of a Journalist entered cinemas in Slovakia. As the filmmakers announce, the film will also convey to the audience previously unpublished witness testimonies, evidence, exclusive information and materials. According to Jitka Kotrlová, co-producer of the film, their aim was to examine not only the murder of two young people, but also the consequences of the tragic event that sparked the biggest protests in Slovakia since the fall of communism. The film, directed by Matt Sarnicki, is based on materials from the police file that are not so familiar to the Slovak viewer, it puts the whole case into a broader context, it is based on information that has been processed by investigative journalists, especially Pavla Holcova, who worked with Jan Kuciak on international corruption cases.
