Political situation after remains uncertain after gov’ts fall

Almost a month after the government failed to withstand no confidence vote, the future political development in Slovakia remains uncertain. On Sunday, acting PM Eduard Heger reiterated that he will try to prevent a snap general election from taking place in Slovakia this year. He stated it would be "nonsense" to put the country at such risk at this time. Heger said, he has been holding talks on forming a new coalition of 76 MPs. According to him, the approach of the Sloboda a Solidarita (SaS) party will be crucial.

Speaker of Parliament and Sme rodina chair Boris Kollár and MP and chair of opposition Smer-SD Robert Fico concurred in a TV debate on Sunday, that Slovakia needs a solid and stable government. Kollár expressed his opinion that a snap general election should be held to resolve the situation. The former PM Fico is also for snap election. He reiterated that his party will aim to win the next general election and that post-election cooperation between Smer-SD and Hlas-SD would be the best option for the country.

Investment Minister Veronika Remišová (Za ľudí) and Independent MP Richard Raši (Hlas-SD) agreed in a TV debate that caretaker government would not be the right solution to the situation. According to them, there is no guarantee that it would be supported by Parliament and Slovakia would then find itself in the same situation in which it is currently. So far, none of the parties and not even president Zuzana Čaputová expressed a desire for this solution.

Juraj Šeliga MP of the Za ľudí party stated he does not want to be falsely optimistic but talks on the new coalition of 76 MPs are in progress and the result of the efforts will depend on the approach of the Sloboda and Solidarity (SaS) party. However, the SaS party claims in reaction to Šeliga’s statements that no one has approached it to negotiate a new majority. At the same time, the party talks about clear ideas on how to proceed, but does not yet specify them and is waiting for negotiations.
