More than 32,000 people, 120 organisations and companies have so far supported the public appeal - Ide nám o život - It's About Our Lives, which calls for a safe life in Slovakia for LGBTI+ people. Representatives of the initiative also reiterate their appeal to political leaders to take concrete steps to improve the lives of people from this community. "Two months after the murder of Matúš and Juraj, LGBTI+ people in Slovakia are still waiting for concrete changes to be adopted at the political level. Even after several meetings with Slovak government representatives, the five demands from the Ide nam o zivot appeal have not been translated into concrete proposals by the government or parliament. Neither have the homophobic or discriminatory attacks or even legislative proposals from some MPs subsided," the initiative concluded. It points out that the social acceptance and legal status of LGBTI+ people in Slovakia is one of the worst in the European Union. "We are one of the last EU countries that has no legislative framework in place to support same-sex partnerships or policies to protect rainbow families. The best interests of the children who grow up in these families are not respected. At the same time, transgender people do not currently have access to transition-related health care," Martin Macko, spokesperson for the initiative, said. The initiative - Ide nám o život was created in immediate response to the terrorist attack on 12 October in the centre of Bratislava, in which two men were murdered. In the appeal, more than 60 different civil society organisations call for a safe life in Slovakia for LGBTI+ people, their children and families.
