Progress in Slovak-Hungarian cooperation

Close cooperation between Slovakia and Hungary brings progress in the areas of infrastructure projects and economic cooperation, despite the fact that there are issues on which the two countries may have different views. Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Rastislav Kacer and his Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto stated at a joint news conference following their meeting in Bratislava on Monday. "There are far fewer issues on which we differ than the practical and positive agenda in which we are cooperating closely and making very concrete progress," said the Slovak minister. Kacer pointed to the work of bilateral Slovak-Hungarian working groups. "I presented 57 measures last week on which we agreed. I called on my colleagues in the Government to start working on their implementation so that the status of Hungarians in Slovakia and that of Slovaks in Hungary would improve," he said. Szijjarto underlined the importance of good partnership and neighbourly relations in a time that has brought extraordinary security, energy and economic challenges. In addition to bilateral relations, the ministers discussed current regional and European issues during their talks. Robert Fico, the chairman of the Smer SD party, met today with Péter Szijjártó, the Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Affairs of Hungary, at the headquarters of the Smer-SD party in Bratislava. According to the Smer-SD party's press department, the main topic of the meeting was national interests.
