The United Nations have been promoting peace in the world for almost eight decades and it's necessary to streamline the UN system so as to buttress the rules-based international order better, Foreign Affairs Minister Rastislav Kacer stated in his opening speech at a conference titled 'The Task of the United Nations in the Post-February 24 World' on Tuesday. “At times when, practically every single day, Russia grossly and inexcusably tramples on ideals and principles that the UN has been founded on, it is important to commemorate the importance of the UN's mission all the louder and more frequently," said Kacer. The disruption of the peace architecture and the spiral of unprecedented crises is felt by the entire world, not only Slovakia. "Particularly endangered and in the position of greatest vulnerability are the poorest countries, which is why we mustn't forget the importance of international solidarity, too," he emphasized. The conference also included a discussion on Slovakia's aid to Ukraine and the role of UN agencies in supporting Ukrainian refugees in Slovakia. "Current crises, be they security, food, energy or economic, confirm that the greater the challenge we face, the more important is global cooperation, in which the UN plays a key role. Global problems know no borders and we can only solve them together." stated the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MZVEZ) of the Slovak Republic Ingrid Brocková. As part of the event, Káčer awarded Silver Plaques from the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic to Juraj Riečan and Otto Guštafík. "He praised them for their many years of successful work in the UN system and spreading the good name of Slovakia abroad," noted the communication department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic. The goal of the conference, which Káčer opened on Tuesday at the Department of Diplomacy in Bratislava, is to bring the activities of the UN closer to the wider public, especially on the occasion of the 77th anniversary of its establishment.
