Slovak President Andrej Kiska following a meeting with his Polish counterpart Bronislaw Komorowski in Warsaw on Tuesday said that that Slovakia must adopt a clear, responsible and honest attitude towards its NATO commitments.
Kiska welcomed Poland's initiative to convene a meeting of the presidents of the Visegrad Four (V4) countries (Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic) and the Baltic States (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) ahead of the September NATO summit in Wales. The goal of the meeting will be to formulate a joint stance for these countries regarding the summit. The Slovak president stressed that peace, prosperity and stability in Central Europe are not possible without Poland playing an active role. He described the V4 as a key platform and a pillar of regional co-operation. According to Kiska, Slovakia perceives that the level of security in the region has deteriorated, and the country advocates joint defence projects in order to reduce costs. This was discussed as part of the Slovak president’s first official visit to Slovakia’s northern neighbour which is planned to boost regional cooperation between the Visegrad Four, as well as to exchange opinions on the current European political and security challenges.
