Poverty in Slovakia has been receding despite the fact that 2012 was difficult in economic terms. This follows from a Europe-wide survey the results of which were presented by the Stats Office. “Slovakia continues to rank among countries with the biggest social gaps.
Back in 2012, 12.8 percent of people of Slovakia, that is 695,000 people, were under the risk of poverty. However, when compared to the year before, a drop by 22,000 people, or by 0.4 percent, was observed,” said Stats Office head Ludmila Benkovičová. The threshold for risk of poverty was set at income of €4,042 per person per year. The threat of poverty in Slovakia is most marked for unemployed people (43.8 percent), incomplete households with children (30.1 percent) and families of three or more children (29.9 percent). The European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) was conducted in Slovakia for the ninth time. The Slovak Stats Office carried out the survey in 6,000 households across Slovakia between April and May 2013, with the data applying to 2012.
