Internet overtakes television for Slovak youth

Television is no longer the most influential medium for the current young generation, with the internet now occupying top spot instead, shows a survey on media consumption that TNS Slovakia released on its Thursday show. The Internet is currently the most widely used and trusted medium of all among the young generation.

Young people spend an average of four hours per day glued to the internet. As for television, that time has shrunk by half. As many as 73 percent of the respondents called the internet the most informative medium, while 62 percent think it's the most fun medium. Thirty-two percent believe it's the most trustworthy medium. Television prevailed only in the realm of advertisements, as 56 percent thought that TV commercials are the most engaging while only 32 percent thought the same of online adverts. According to TNS Slovakia's manager Vladimíra Bunčáková, when it comes to printed newspapers, close to one-third of today’s youth do not read any newspapers and sixteen percent of the respondents do not read any magazines. Those who do read printed papers and magazines prefer tabloid-style information. The survey canvassed views from a sample of 1,500 respondents aged 12-26 between October and November 2013. This rise in the popularity of the internet follows the global trend of newspaper sales declining.
