The Prosecutor-General's Office decided to investigate the findings of a report on the living conditions in juvenile detention centres drawn up by Ombudswoman Jana Dubovcová. The report in question was based on the Ombudswoman's inspections at a total of nine re-education facilities last year.
The outcomes of the inspection pointed to alleged violations of principal human rights and freedoms of under-age individuals placed in a number of the surveyed facilities. When unveiling her findings at a session of Parliament's education committee on May 12, Dubovcová reported that the youngsters are literally starving as they have to make do with food costing less than three euro per day. She even brought along packs containing the food that each young person has to make do with. The pack contained one hard-boiled egg, a small radish, two bread rolls, a banana, a soup-free lunch - some chicken with small potatoes without vegetables and gravy, a pot of yoghurt, and a curd spread with two slices of bread. According to law, the Prosecutor-General‘s Office is obliged to control the juvenile detention centres.
