Public Health Office: Vaccinated people can contract COVID in very rare cases

Both research and practice show that vaccines against COVID-19 are highly efficient, although even a vaccinated person can contract the illness in rare cases, Dasa Rackova of the Public Health Office stated on Tuesday.

Out of the 1,437,945 individuals vaccinated only with the first dose, 6,137 tested positive. Among 682,859 people vaccinated with the second does, 1,629 tested positive. "In the period of 14 days after the administration of the second dose, we registered 845 positive persons," said Rackova.

She pointed out that a number of reasons exist why vaccinated individuals can contract the disease. The production of antibodies following the jab also depends on the immunity system of the individual and the reaction elicited by the vaccine might not prove sufficient for a small percentage of people. "In general, we also can't rule out that SARS-CoV-2 was contracted by the vaccinated person shortly before the administration of the vaccine - that is, before a sufficient amount of antibodies had time to generate," she added.
