Health Ministry preparing to allow choice of COVID-19 vaccine

The Health Ministry is preparing a registration form that would allow people to choose their COVID-19 vaccine, Health Minister Vladimir Lengvarský (an OLaNO nominee) claimed before the Government session on Wednesday.

According to the minister, the public would have the option to choose even officially unregistered vaccines. As for vaccination with the AstraZeneca vaccine, which was suspended on Tuesday for those who were about to receive their first shot, the minister said that this vaccine should continue to be put to use in the country.

Lengvarský claimed that his ministry needs two or three weeks to render the new registration system operational, which means that it could be introduced on 1 June.

Explaining why vaccination with the AstraZeneca vaccine has been suspended, the minister said that a recent death after inoculation with the jab is among the less-serious reasons. "The main reason is that we don't have enough of the vaccine," he said, noting that those who are waiting for their second AstraZeneca shot will get it. Those who were waiting for their first shot will be vaccinated with the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine instead.

The ministry at the same time intends to engage general practitioners in the vaccination campaign. According to Lengvarský, their portfolio will include all vaccines apart from the Pfizer.
