A total of 21,660 people were tested during a voluntary and free mass testing of the population for novel coronavirus that took place last weekend (December 19 and 20) in the western Slovak regional capital Trenčín. Taking the town's population (56,000) into consideration the number represents approximately a turnout at the level of 38,7%. However, even people from the surrounding villages could take part. The testing was carried out with antigen tests and 2.59% of people (560) tested positive. "It is a high figure that attests to the fact that the situation is worsening dramatically", stated Trenčín mayor Richard Rybníček. The mass testing was carried out on the initiative of the local municipality. Trenčín is currently one of the Slovak regions with the most alarming situation regarding the spread of COVID-19.
