Bratislava mayor: COVID-19 situation in Bratislava serious, food trucks still in the old town

The current situation concerning the epidemic in Bratislava is serious and taking a radical turn for the worse, mayor of Bratislava Matus Vallo warned on Tuesday. Data from the start of the second wave of the outbreak had indicated that Bratislava was doing quite well in comparison with other cities. "That no longer holds true, however," says Vallo. The capital city has reported that the incidence rate - the daily average of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants - has increased from 174 to 241 new cases over the past week. The rate of infection is increasing by 6-7.5 percent daily, meaning that the number of positive cases doubles every one or two weeks.

Meanwhile, despite the fact that the official Christmas markets aren't taking place in Bratislava's old town this year, visitors might find there food trucks and stands offering snacks and drinks. Even though mayor Vallo strongly opposes it, he says his hands are tied since the old town doesn't belong to his jurisdiction. Bratislava old town mayor Zuzana Aufrichtová, who allowed food trucks to be there, says the situation is being monitored and asks people to stay vigilant and wear face masks.
