Slovakia spent €26.3 million on foreign military missions in 2013

Slovakia spent approximately €26.3 million on foreign military missions, with the bulk of the sum covered from the budget of the Defence Ministry, according to the Report on Slovakia's Activities within the 2013 International Crisis Management Operation is set to be discussed by the Government on Wednesday.

In total, Slovakia was involved in 10 missions and operations, with the largest military presence assigned to NATO's operation in Afghanistan. Late last year, 289 soldiers were despatched to five provinces: Kabul, Wardak, Nangarhar, Uruzgan and Kandahar. Slovakia also contributed in Afghanistan to the civilian EU-led mission EUPOL, assigning two Slovak policemen in the role of consultants to the Kabul Command.  The second largest foreign operation for Slovakia was the UNFICYP mission in Cyprus, where 157 Slovak soldiers and two police officers took part.

Slovaks also took part in the International Crisis Management military operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and NATO Command in Sarajevo, where 36 Slovak Armed Forces members were stationed. Six police officers took part in the EULEX mission, aimed at bolstering the rule of law in Kosovo. Another three officers and one member of the Financial Administration were despatched to the border mission for Moldova and Ukraine. Slovakia also participated in an observer mission in Georgia, a police consultancy one in Kyrgyzstan, and two others in the Middle East.
