Robert Fico’s Government is in the first half of its four-year term. However, the experience with governing of the Cabinet as a one-party government is not very favourable, says the president of the Public Affairs Institute Grigorij Mesežnikov in his evaluation of the first half of the term.
The current government came into office on 4 April, 2012, after SMER-SD convincingly won the elections following the collapse of the centre-right government of Iveta Radičová. “A one party government does not automatically need to pose any risk if its procedures are in accordance with a liberal-democratic regime and institutional framework. But already at the time when the government was formed there were some concerns that the majority syndrome, which is actually the operating mode of SMER-SD will come fully to the forefront. And this has been confirmed,” said Mesežnikov.
