An average bribe given when trying to acquire a commission or a subsidy is around 13 percent from
the total sum of a commission. If we take into account only the commissions overseen by public
authorities, bribery consumes as much as €500 million a year in the country. These are the results of the survey
carried out by the Slovak Business Alliance (PAS) in association with Transparency International
Slovensko and the Economic and Social Reforms Institute (INEKO).
Their Anti-corruption Initiative “was set to respond to the fact that entrepreneurs view the issue of
corruption to be very serious. While they identified corruption to be the fourth most significant obstacle
for their business activities in 2006, corruption made its way up to reach the top only four years later,"
said PAS executive director Robert Kicina. The project has shown that we’re most likely to find
corruption among contracts concluded with ministries, institutions providing money from structural
funds, other central state administration bodies and regional government authorities. Entrepreneurs
with direct experience with doing business with state bodies viewed corruption to be less frequent
than those who haven't concluded any contract with the state.
