Comenius University (UK) and the Slovak Technical University (STU), both based in Bratislava, along with the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV), announced on Monday that they will join the global climate strike via a march in downtown Bratislava on Friday morning, which will start in front of the Law Faculty.
"As educational and scientific institutions whose mission is to contribute to the development of education and science, as well as to the development of society as a whole, we feel responsible for the state of our planet. We have therefore decided to support the general call for a strike action and to contribute to the awakening not only of our students and young people, but of all the people of this country on this issue. Climate change and its manifestations can no longer be questioned or underestimated. There is no time for discussion, let's act now," read their joint statement.
They also vowed to engage in "revealing the truth" with exact figures and facts, in reaction to what they called "conspiracy theories", in order to change public perception of the issue. The Student Council of Universities is also joining the global climate strike.
The global climate strike is due to take place in thousands of cities worldwide ahead of the UN climate summit set to be held in New York on September 23, which will be attended by a Slovak delegation headed by President Zuzana Čaputová. In Slovakia, apart from Bratislava, protests are planned in Žilina, Košice and Banská Bystrica.
