Ukraine opposition MPs have asked Slovakia for humanitarian help for injured demonstrators in Kiev. Except for drugs and bandages, they would also like to transfer the injured to Slovakia.
However, if Ukraine declares a state of emergency, Slovakia won't be prepared for a potential mass influx of refugees, said the Armed Forces Academy's Security and Defence Institute Director and Foreign Affairs analyst Ivo Samson. “If it weren't hundreds but thousands or tens of thousands of refugees that we were talking about here, Slovakia would be unable to deal with such a large wave of refugees without the aid of the EU, which has had ample time to get ready for such a catastrophic scenario,” stressed Samson.
A total of 28 people have died during the disturbances, with another 287 admitted to hospital and 400 receiving medical treatment after the latest wave of anti-Government protests. The protesters in Kiev attacked police with stones, petrol bombs and other improvised devices on Tuesday. The police responded with tear gas, rubber bullets, and stun and smoke grenades.
