Slovakia opposes the new proposal from the European Commission that changes the existing EU school milk programme, Slovak Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Ľubomír Jahnátek said on Monday. He does not like the proposed unification of conditions for the allocation of EU funds for programmes that encourage kids to consume more milk and fruit in schools.
“The new norms would result in the reduction of the number of schools that are eligible to participate as the European Commission is discussing limiting the support to only 6-10 year olds,” said Jahnátek. The current model applied in Slovakia covers all students and pupils aged 3-18. It includes around 2,400 schools with up to 50,000 students. It is based on a three-component-funding system: one part comes from the EU budget, another portion is contributed by the budget of the member states, and the third part by the parents of pupils.
