Slovak teachers have written a letter to Education Minister Dušan Čaplovič on how they would see the Slovak education sector functioning in the future. The Slovak Chamber of Teachers is asking for a systematic change in how the sector operates. The Chamber claims the voices of teachers and professionals from schools are often left unheard.
Moreover, they claim they are not invited to councils or other working sessions which prepare changes to the education system and in fact teachers who are to introduce and execute these changes often don’t agree with them. That is why they have decided to give their standpoint in written form and prepared a several-page long material for Education Minister Čaplovič containing suggestions and initiatives for changes in schools. In the letter to the Minister and the Council for systematic changes in education the Chamber of Teachers is asking for a change to fees in the education system, such as fees for re-sitting exams or the issuing transcripts or copies of report cards. Among other things, teachers demand a 10% rise in their salaries on an annual basis until, as they say, their pay reaches the level of their education and the social significance of their profession. They want their wages to rise in accordance to the number of years spent in the profession.
