Nuclear energy will remain the core of the Slovak energy policy. The Economy Ministry is currently preparing a new energy policy which will indicate the path Slovakia will heading in this sector until the year 2030. “Supporting nuclear energy resources is the core element of the current energy policy of Slovakia. In the new policy which is currently being prepared, the strategy will be to develop nuclear energy further. By the year 2030, the share of carbonless technologies on the overall electricity consumption should be up to 80%” stated Economy Minister Tomáš Malatinský after a meeting with Ministers for nuclear energy in London.
According to the Slovak Minister, Slovakia supports and will support investments into nuclear energy. However, it refuses to finance nuclear projects from the state budget. “One of the means of financing it are loans from the European Atomic Energy Community, which could be increased. Another means would be broadening the mandate of international bank organs which are currently banned from direct investments into new nuclear plant projects” added the Slovak Economy Minister. Minister Malatinský claims Slovakia has all the preconditions to use nuclear energy at the highest level of security. However, the Minister does admit Slovakia is ready to discuss further sensible measures which could contribute to increased nuclear energy security of Slovakia.
