Slovak film-maker Mira Fornay has won one of the three equal 2013 Hivos Tiger Awards for upcoming talent at the 42nd International Film Festival in Rotterdam with her feature Moj pes Killer (My dog Killer) on Friday. The film was shot through Slovak-Czech coproduction within the Slovak-Moravian border area in the spring of 2012. Forany chose only non-actors for her film that featured a lot of natural sounds and real settings. Therefore, she managed to capture an authentic, almost documentary-like portrait of the bleak lives of the film's protagonists.
The Tiger Award festival is famous for its strict criteria when it comes to the selection of films aimed at presenting new talents and their film debuts. Besides the Slovak film maker, the two other awards went to Austria and Iran. Daniel Hoesl secured the prize with his film Soldier Jane (Soldate Jeannette) and Mohammad Shirvani impressed the judges with his film Fat Shaker (Larzanandye Charbi). All the winners received €15.000. Mira Fornay (35) graduated from the Prague-based FAMU film academy and the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield (United Kingdom). Her feature debut Foxes (Listicky, 2009) was premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was also shown in Rotterdam. The award winning My Dog Killer is the second film on Fornay‘s portfolio.
