The director of the Slovak Food Chamber Jarmila Halgašová believes that state inspectors failed when dealing with rotten Polish meat to Slovakia. [As many as 300 kilograms of rotten chicken from Poland was found by Slovak inspectors masked with empty boxes.]
“While other EU-member states apply [tough measures] when it comes to health safety related to food from foreign suppliers, Slovak inspectors took up a very careless attitude, only returning the rotten meat to Poland, thereby allowing it to be returned to Slovakia via a different border crossing,” said Halgašová adding that Slovak farmers and food producers are often bullied by the veterinary authorities for mere peccadilloes that don't threaten the health of consumers while the authorities are often lenient towards foreign suppliers of low-quality food. “No wonder that the production of Slovak food is on the decline, and that Slovakia is becoming the rubbish bin of Europe," said PKS director Jarmila Halgašová. According to the Agriculture Ministry spokesperson Zuzana Gulová, it's beyond all understanding that Halgašová is making public statements on the work of the State Veterinary and Food Authority based on incompetent and unverified reports aired on TV. “When it comes to the delivery of rotten Polish meat on 7 March, the State Veterinary and Food Authority handed the supplies to the competent authority, which made sure that the meat was disposed of in an incinerator in Poland. The Slovak authority acted fully in line with current EU regulations,” said Gulová.
