The National Criminal Agency intervened in the Bratislava region on Monday morning, with the police conducting home searches and searches of other premises and plots of land in several locations in Bratislava and its surroundings. The intervention was allegedly connected with taking toxic waste to a landfill under the Bratislava bypass.
In July already, police had initiated a criminal prosecution for the illegal handling of waste in connection with the alleged taking of hazardous contaminated soil from the former bus station site in Bratislava to the construction site of the D4 motorway and the R7 expressway in a case of unauthorised waste management. The consortium building the bypass previously declared that the material used for the construction had valid quality certificates and that it met strict criteria for assessing the suitability of its use for the construction including the condition of zero soil contamination.
According to the Transport minister Árpád Érsek, the construction needs to stop these suspicious activities. "If we are going to build on waste and illegally, where does this take our country? I agree that the National Criminal Agency should find out who is responsible for this," stated the minister.
During the intervention, the police arrested the statutory representative of a waste company, allegedly associated with various illegal landfills in the vicinity of Bratislava.
