One of the most important tasks of Slovak foreign policy is to maintain Slovakia's strong position within the European Union (EU) and NATO, said Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister František Ružicka at the Slovak Security Forum taking place in Bratislava. "Our security depends on the force that these organisations have. I have a feeling that we need to communicate with people better and more clearly and declare where we belong; both in terms of values and civilisation," he said, adding that Slovakia is not only a consumer of security but actively involved in boosting it. The diplomat pointed to the danger of fake news and an information war used in an attempt to weaken democracy in Europe. "The goal is to weaken military and political alliances and thus to bring Europe back to a time of closed borders, limited movement, labour constraints and mistrust," he said.
Slovakia's Permanent Representative to NATO, Radovan Javorčik, isn't aware of the fact that the Alliance is in crisis. "I would rather say that we're speaking about fundamental changes in the style of political communication and in international relations as such," said Javorčik. The Slovak Security Forum is among the largest security conferences in Slovakia. It's organised by the Euro-Atlantic Center and the University Library with the financial support of the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry and NATO's Public Diplomacy Section.
