For the fourth consecutive year, the last week of September is observed across Europe as the European Week of Sport. Organised and coordinated by the European Commission, this campaign should motivate people to start participating actively in sport. According to the data from a special Eurobarometer on Sport and physical activity, from December 2017, almost 60% of Europeans are moving less than is healthy. Overall, in the EU, men exercise, play sport or engage in other physical activity more than women. The proportion of people who exercise or play sport regularly or with some regularity is highest in Finland (69%), Sweden (67%) and Denmark (63%). Respondents are least likely to exercise or play sport in Bulgaria, Greece and Portugal (in each of these countries, 68% never exercise or play sport).
In Slovakia, almost half of the respondents claim they never take part in sporting activities. If so, then the majority do them at home and not in fitness centres or at other public places. Last year, almost 600 events took place in Slovakia during the European Week of Sport in more than 360 cities and towns. The events taking place in 2018 can be found on the websites of the Slovak Sports Centre.
