On Monday, a delegation of five MEPs met with the Slovak President Andrej Kiska and should also meet Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini to examine the security of journalists, corruption and keeping the principles of the state of law. They also have more meetings on their schedule: with the Special Prosecutor, the head of the Police Corps, journalists, NGOs and the family of murdered investigative anti-corruption journalist Ján Kuciak, who lost his life in February. Ján Kuciak wrote about the controversial businessman Marián Kočner, alleged links between the Italian mafia and Slovak leading politicians and Slovak police as well as about frauds related to the use of EU funds. After his death, Prime Minister Robert Fico, Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák and President of the Police Corps Tibor Gašpar stepped down.
The delegation of MEPs consists of Sophia In 't Veld of the liberal fraction, Roberta Metsola of the people's fraction, Josef Weidenholzer of the socialists, Monica Macoveiová (conservatives and reformists) and Sven Giegold of the Greens.
The EU delegation should also visit Malta, where another investigative anti-corruption journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was killed in October 2017. Moreover, as the TASR press agency wrote, another delegation from the European Parliament should visit Slovakia in December, which will look into the use of European funds.
