Slovak Vice-premier and Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák at the invitation of Swiss Federal President and Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter spoke as the main guest on Wednesday at the Swiss cantonal governments conference in Interlaken, which was devoted to the issue of freedom of movement and migration in Europe.
In view of a forthcoming vote on the free movement of people and immigration, the topic is particularly relevant in Switzerland at the moment. Lajčák in his speech stressed that the citizens of European countries view the integration processes especially through the lens of free travel and mobility. “This is particularly true for Slovakia and our neighbours in Central Europe, as the opportunity to study or work abroad for us is a result of the fall of the Iron Curtain,” he said. Therefore, Lajčák warned against the populists and prejudice against migrants that have become part of the political scene in many European countries.
