Despite record freezing temperatures embracing North America, towns and cities across Slovakia are enjoying a remarkably warm winter so far. Most ski resorts however are still waiting for snow, or frost at the very least in order to operate artificial snow making machines, however neither are in the forecast as yet.
Many resorts in Slovakia are sitting idle waiting for snow, some are closed, and a small handful of others have been able to make use of artificial snow machines. Aleš Solár, the director of the regional tourism operator Severný Spiš Pieniny believes that skiing season will begin soon: “We are waiting for the first snow, so we have been working on signage and trail maintenance. We’d hoped that by early January we would start”. Solár also hopes that when winter finally arrives, the season could last until mid-March. “While this very hot weather does not help, we believe that winter will show her cold face”, he added. Meteorologists aren’t quite as optimistic in the short term however, with the Slovak Hydro-Meteorological Institute forecasting similar unseasonably warm temperatures continuing well into next week.
