Police reconstruction of the murder of investigative journalist

More than three months after the murder of the Slovak investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová, the police returned to their family home in the village of Veľká Mača, Trnava region, where the reconstruction of the murder took place on Tuesday.

The police have still not been able to clarify the murders. In addition to police, other people also returned to the crime scene, with Ján Kuciak's father, Martina Kušnírová's mother and Daniel Lipšic, a lawyer of Ján Kuciak's family among them. "The police closed the street and the neighbourhood. They secured the entrance to the streets with stripes beyond which no one is allowed to go," wrote the Topky.sk website.

As an investigative journalist, Ján Kuciak was writing about the alleged links between the Italian mafia and members of the Slovak government and about the misuse of EU agricultural funds in the east of Slovakia.

The double murder took place on February 21st. Subsequently, a number of mass public protests took place during the following 2 months throughout Slovakia and also abroad. Meantime, the situation resulted in the resignations of then Prime Minister Robert Fico and Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák. Fico's assistant Mária Trošková and the Deputy Director of the Slovak Security Council, Viliam Jasaň, also left their posts due to alleged links to the mafia. Róbert Krajmer resigned from his position as chief of the anti-corruption unit of the National Criminal Agency (NAKA) and Tibor Gašpar was removed from his post as head of the Police Corps.
