Last year the Slovak Intelligence Agency monitored cases of alleged corruption, cronyism, and the activity of destructive religious communities, according to a partially declassified report published on its website. It had information about entities that by spreading their ideology tried to gain influence at the level of Government and its agencies as well as the private sector.
Although the report does not offer concrete names it mentions cases involving the suspected manipulation of public procurement in the activities of a state-owned energy company in favour of particular firms for the personal benefit of the management. The Intelligence Agency collected information about non-transparent auctions for construction contracts managed by the regional self-governments granted to pre-selected companies from which local officials should have received bribes.
The report speaks about alleged corruption in the approval of applications for grants from EU funds to private companies. Entrepreneurs who have received subsidies from EU funds for projects exaggerated their budgets. There were also cases of suspected unauthorised spending of subsidies for investment projects in agriculture, and even the unlawful payment of social benefits and pensions being granted on the basis of corrupt practices. Illegal property transfers of agricultural plots and their reclassification as residential plots were also detected.
