Slovak pupils are one the unhappiest in OECD countries, an international survey Pisa revealed. While the OECD average sees some 80 percent of pupils happy, in Slovakia it’s only 64.4 percent.
The unhappier students can be found only in Czech Republic and South Korea. “South Korean pupils might not feel content at their school desks but they are certainly better students than Slovaks”, the director of National Institute for Certified Educational Measurements Romana Kanovská, following after the results of international testing. According to Education Minister Dušan Čaplovič, teachers, school and growing aggression are behind the poor result.
The PISA test has also revealed that the feeling of unhappiness has nothing to do with how pupils perform at school. Those from Finland, Estonia, or South Korea have proved to be good at tests, yet claim to feel unhappy. Children from Latin America on the other hand feel quite happy although their results were not very representative.
