Nuclear Power Plant Eyes Land for New Construction

The Nuclear Energy Company of Slovakia (JESS) has 115 hectares of land set aside in the cadastre of the villages of Jaslovské Bohunice and Radošovce for a new nuclear power plant. The ownership of land is essential for negotiations with potential investors in the new nuclear power plant.

JESS CEO Štefan Šabík said this at a meeting with residents of Jaslovské Bohunice. For investors to consider a project of between 4 billion and 6 billion euro, in addition to documents which prove the feasibility of the investment, they also need land. “We are not talking about construction yet, we are still assessing whether we can build here,” Šabík explained in the discussion. He thus rejected the argument of one of the residents that the company has already decided on the new nuclear unit without public participation before the end of the processes required by law. According to the mayor Bozena Krajčovičová, people felt they did not have enough up to date information about development of nuclear energy. About sixty residents came to the local cultural centre. Alongside the new nuclear power plant, they were also interested in the service life extension of the NPP V-2, its safety and then importation of nuclear waste from abroad to the site.
