Danube day celebrated in 14 countries

To bring the Danube River closer to people, to preserve its cleanliness and the quality of water for future generations is one of the main messages of the International Danube Day. It officially falls on June 29 and includes a series of events in different locations. In 2017, the celebration of the International Danube Day will bring together more than 81 million people in 14 European countries, including Slovakia. Here, the Danube Day celebrations already began on 24 June, when volunteers from nearly 40 towns and villages cleaned the banks of the Danube and the Little Danube rivers. They responded to the call of Environment Minister László Sólymos, who took part in the cleaning, too.

Besides cultural events taking place in the Slovak capital, Bratislava on 29 June, the Slovak town of Štúrovo and the Hungarian town of Esztergom, which are divided by the river, will celebrate the International Day of the Danube together within the European project DANube Urban Brand.

The river Danube springs in the Black Forest in Germany and has a length of 2857 km, of which 172 km are in Slovakia. The Danube runs through ten countries: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine.
