International Month of Photography Underway in Bratislava

The 23rd year of the International Month of Photography Festival is now underway in Bratislava, as well as other central European countries with 27 individual galleries and locations taking part throughout the centre of Bratislava.

The main theme given for this year’s festival is the classic print, highlighting the printing techniques of the 19th century which have gained special appeal due to the flood of digital production. In addition to the exhibition program in Bratislava, visitors will be able to take part in workshops, guided tours, international portfolio exhibitions, book presentations, international conferences throughout the month. Exhibitions such as the “Mirror with a memory” include some of the oldest surviving Slovak daguerreotype portraits from the years 1840 to 1850. Included in this historic theme will be an exhibition investigating the relationship between photography and society in the totalitarian fifties of the 20th century called, “Preoccupied with Beauty”. Other noteworthy works will be the “dancing photographer” debut exhibition by Youngho Kang from South Korea, and the “Imaginary couples” exhibition by Olivier Ciappa from France, which opens the topic of homophobia with portraits of famous personalities discussing sexual orientation equality.
