The candidature of the Polish city of Krakow to host the Winter Olympic Games in 2022 in cooperation with Slovakia is according to the Slovak government quite a realistic project, Peter Kažimír, the Finance Minister said after Wednesday’s governmental meeting.
In regard to the financial burden of hosting such an event Kažimír claimed that money should be spent primarily on things, which will be of benefit to Slovakia also once the Olympics have finished – for example in infrastructure as the roads are in very bad condition.
“Slovakia definitely has a chance, if it decides in the right time to cooperate with the right countries, in this case being Poland and the city of Krakow,” said the Finance Minister. František Chmelár, the president of the Slovak Olympic Committee shares this optimism. Chmelár sees the biggest rival being the German candidature of Munich, which is, according to Chmelár, prepared to host an event of this importance.
As stated in the document approved by the government on Wednesday, the preparation of Slovakia’s Olympic candidacy might cost the country till the end of July 2015 more than €480,000.
