An Expensive Campaign to Promote Science to be Launched

The Government is to launch one of the most expensive campaigns in its history to promote science and technology, worth €15 million, according to the Hospodarske noviny daily.

The sum is bigger than the total amount the nine presidential candidates spent on the campaign in the neighbouring Czech Republic, or the Slovak ruling party Smer-SD spent on its election campaign in 2012. Half of it should go into the construction of a new science museum in Bratislava, which should open by the end of next year. About €4.8 million has been allocated to a massive advertising campaign due to start next January.

“Every industry needs to invest in marketing if we want to attract young people to work in science,” said Jan Turna, the Head of Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information (SCSTI). Economic analyst Radovan Durana disagrees arguing that it’s in fact a way how to waste money.
