Slovaks want EU to investigate corruption in Slovakia

Almost two-thirds of Slovaks would like to see corruption in Slovakia being dealt with by EU prosecutors and judges, according to an internet poll commissioned by Slovak MEP Anna Záborská of the Christian Democratic Movement. The respondents were asked a question as to how the EU could be helpful to Slovakia. As many as 62.9% of them stated that they'd like to see EU's assistance in investigation and prosecution of corruption in Slovakia. Conversely, the lowest number of Slovaks were in favour of creating a federal European government, said Záborská on Friday. According to Záborská, the survey has made it clear that Slovaks don't trust domestic authorities.

Nonetheless, involving European law and justice enforcement authorities in investigation and prosecution of corruption in Slovakia would mean giving up further powers to the EU, effectively taking a step towards an unwanted federal European government, she noted. As for other issues, 37.4% of the respondents believe that a unified social model should be created for all EU member states, while 36.3% want to see more support for the education of young Slovaks abroad. Záborská interpreted these figures by stating that the promise of a social Europe has obviously been forgotten in the EU's quest for boosting its common market.

The survey was carried out in late December and early January on a sample of 1,767 respondents from throughout Slovakia.
