Slovaks do not have to worry about the change in their legal position in the UK during the transition period leading up to Brexit, wrote the SITA press agency on Monday, citing the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in London.
The transition period will start when the UK government officially presents its intention to withdraw from the EU. In accordance with Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union there will then be two years for negotiations. During this time, the UK will have all the rights and obligations of EU membership.
As immigration rules may subsequently tighten, the Slovak embassy emphasized that the ability to prove current as well as previous legal residence in the UK would be an advantage. Therefore, it advises all Slovaks who intend to stay in the United Kingdom to register their residence at the UK Home Office. For those who would like to apply for UK citizenship, the embassy has information on legal ways to obtain dual citizenship on its website.
