Education campaign to prevent drink driving starts

Last week, Slovak beer producers launched an education campaign called "When I drink the car stays at home", reported the Denník N daily. The initiative is a reaction to the current data on the car accidents involving drivers under the influence of alcohol. According to the daily newspaper, drunk drivers caused as many as 22 deaths on Slovaks roads between January and October this year. A further 75 people suffered severe injuries and 371 were left with light injuries in accidents which involved alcohol.

As part of the campaign, the beer producers will give away alcohol testers in selected establishments. People will also receive a guide informing on how long it takes for an 85 kilogram male and a 60 kilogram female to get rid of alcohol from their blood after drinking beer. "It is important not to exceed the limits when a person drinks beer in the evening and has to drive in the morning," the Dennik N daily quotes the beer producers as saying.

According to the data from the police, December is the month when the highest number of drunk drivers appear on the roads. "Approximately 9% of all car accidents in Slovakia are caused by drunk drivers. Out of these, 90% are caused my men and 10% by women," says the beer producers' report citing Ján Ignaták, director of the Traffic Police department.
